I like to try to capture some of the beauty of the natural world around us in my watercolors.  It might be a cascading mountain stream, or the quiet atmosphere of the forest.

I grew up in the east, and spent part of my childhood summers fishing and hiking in the mountains of New England.  While serving as pastor of churches in Minnesota, Wyoming, and Montana, I have used my art in conjunction with my ministry.  One way I have done that is to illustrate children’s sermons.

I began drawing at an early age, then received training at the American Academy of Art in Chicago.  From that point on I became more focused on artwork, finding watercolor to be one of my favorite media.  Teaching classes in both drawing and watercolor has helped me keep sharpening my own skills.

My wife, Joyce, and I lived for a number of years in Helena, and now our home is Bozeman.  It has always been an encouragement for me to meet and learn from other artists, including such contacts as I have had through the MTWS.

Hi Jim - You painted a beautiful work for Race to the Sky, the sled dog race, for 2010. I am on the board of the Montana Sled Dog, Inc, the 501(c)3 nonprofit sponsor of the race. We are mounting an exhibition of many of our works, including yours, at Bernice's Bakery in Missoula for the month of February, with an opening on First Friday, February 2. We have short bios for each artist, and would like to include one for you. I could take information from your statement on this website, or you could send me what you would like.
Thank You,
Tracy O'Reilly

Thank you for sharing this insightful update! It’s wonderful to see the Montana Watercolor Society fostering such a vibrant and supportive community for artists. The resources, exhibitions, and events highlighted are a great reminder of the talent and passion that flourish in Montana’s creative landscape.

I especially appreciate the emphasis on continuing to grow and learn within the watercolor medium. It’s inspiring to see how the society encourages both emerging and established artists to connect and evolve. Looking forward to seeing more of the incredible work that comes from this community!
